Getting there
How to reach the visitor centre.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train: Take a Southeastern high-speed train from London St Pancras (or slower services from Victoria/Charing Cross) to Dover Priory station. | 1-2 hours from London | From Dover Priory station, the visitor centre is a 2-mile, approximately 40-minute walk following brown pedestrian signs. | |
| Car: Drive via the A2 or A20. Use postcode CT15 5NA for sat-navs, turning into the car park on the sharp bend before reaching the Eastern Docks ferry terminal. | Approx. 2 hours from London | £5 for parking | Beware of sat-navs routing you through the Coastguard Station, as there is a barrier and no through route. |
| Walk: Follow the signed pathways, including the Saxon Shore Way, from Dover port, railway station, or town centre up to the cliffs. | 40 mins from town | Free | The route from the town involves a steep, uphill climb to reach the cliff top. |

The cliffs are open year-round. Late spring and summer provide the best weather for clear views of France and wildflowers on the chalk grasslands. Weekdays between October and May are much quieter, making parking easier, though sea breezes are colder.

Practical tips for the paths
The chalk paths are uneven and close to steep drops. Sturdy walking boots or trail shoes with good grip are essential. The coast is highly exposed, so pack a windproof and waterproof jacket, even in summer, as temperatures can drop quickly.
Keep well away from the cliff edges; chalk is prone to natural erosion and can be unstable. If visiting with dogs, keep them on a short lead near the drops and when passing grazing livestock.
